Mr Fong Kin Wah entered the building and construction industry three decades ago. An opportunity to set up his own company presented itself to Mr Fong in 2007; passion led him to set up WF Engineering Pte Ltd (‘WF’) – a company specializing in plumbing and sanitary facility works. Mechanical and electrical (M&E) services need to be well co-ordinated with the architectural and engineering works, both before and during a structure’s construction phase. Hence, WF is committed to accommodate clients’ needs and requests. Excellent coordination, prompt response and building speed enabled WF to build a pool of satisfied customers.
Renowned in its trade, WF was able to obtain their projects through referral and from its pool of satisfied customers as well as tendered projects from local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and multi-national companies (MNCs). WF’s portfolio includes supply and installation of plumbing and sanitary engineering works for air shows, numerous MRT stations, condominiums and commercial buildings. Since 2008, WF has secured the five year term contracts for infrastructure works for the prestigious Formula 1 Grand Prix subsequently; they have renewed their contract with the organizer.
The foundation for productivity, efficiency and quality workmanship is the skill and knowledge base of a company’s workers. As such, WF regularly send their experienced and skilful workers for training and upgrading of trade skills and equipment knowledge. As part of their efforts to give better value to their clients and be environmentally friendly, WF makes effort to utilize green-label products in their projects. WF also achieved various industry standards for management systems such as: ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management Systems and OHSAS 18001:2007 for Occupational Health & Safety, as well as industry awards like BizSAFE STAR.
All of this would not have been possible without the team, whom Mr Fong draw his motivation behind his success, and people who trusted him. Drawing from an adage that he remembered since he started work,” If a worker works under a boss just for the salary, it is not a success and just work, but if a worker works under a boss due to commitment and their desire, the boss is then a successful one.”
While Mr Fong admits there are some trades that count on starting young and seizing opportunities, he has truly succeeded in his work by drawing on his personal experience of starting a business late in life and gaining the relevant business skills and contacts to thrive in a trade with no shortcuts.
Mr Fong also remembers that when he first set up WF, he had insufficient projects and limited resources. He had to spend money wisely, making every penny count. Today, his challenge lies in employing experienced reliable engineers and skilled workers, so that WF can continue their tradition for on-time completion of high quality work.
With the opening up of Myanmar’s economy, WF recently ventured into the country’s construction industry by supplying building materials to support their booming infrastructure demands. Looking forward, Mr Fong plans to continue to penetrate both local and regional market.
“Strive for excellence.. Provide commendable service”
